Judo as a mindset
The mindset of a judoka is very different from the mindset of the common man. We are not just someone who have learned a special skill but also we are someone who learned how to show honour and respect. A martial artist is not a bully looking to impress or intimate another person with their superior skills.
On the contrary, a judoka is looking to defend and protect based on the skills they have acquired. Mental martial arts is not a one-off process. It is something that takes place on a daily basis. Ukemi is the basis of many benefits you will experience in your life at all ages.
Randori and practise is key
No matter how much you learn and study, at the end of the day you want to put what you picked up into practice. As a judoka need to spar on a regular basis. You need and want to spend time on the mat. There is no running away from this process, ideally not even in corona time. The more you practice the better you become although judo is very competitive sport with lots of people who practised it for over 10,000 hours. If you are a casual judoka, you need to practice a minimum of twice per week.
We would definitely recommend learning more than just judo. But if you or your children or family are just starting out, we would suggest motivating them into judo as they will use all muscles and you can take judo into life forever. Judo is a mindset.
