This week we would like to celebrate Salam Abdul, from Welsh Taekwondo Dragons, who has been nominated by his members for our ‘Support Your Coach’ campaign as a thank you for his hard work and commitment during 2020!
Below are a few messages we have received thanking Abdul for his support this year!
“I am a parent of girls, from an ethnic minority, a community which in the past hasn’t shown equality to both genders. Ever since Coach Salam has formed numerous activities for our youth I have been intrigued and keen to involve my daughters. I believe it is vital both genders can know how and when to defend themselves, build a level of discipline and a healthy lifestyle. Coach Salam has shown the utmost love and care to all the children and parents/guardians involved by welcoming us with open arms into a safe community where we can always voice our opinions.
Pre-covid was extremely easy as Coach Salam interacted with the children in the most fun and yet disciplined way. He is very professional with his work but also shows a sense of care and safety, so if my daughters feel something is difficult or needs more work coach Salam immediately attends to this. Coach Salam ensures they eat well too during training, they were provided with healthy fruits and water/squash, and with that he educates them further to engrave in their minds how important it is to continue to eat healthy at home. My kids come home and seem even more excited to eat an apple rather than a packet of crisps which is brilliant for any parent!
Coach Salam individually highlights my kids strengths with feedback every week, this helps me understand what I can do to help my kids improve each time. He has always created a positive environment for our kids making sure they are safe always with padded floors and safety measures making sure each class doesn’t become crowded.
Now that we are in lockdown we haven’t felt a loss in any sense. My kids have missed their coach but coach Salam has never given up!
Since lockdown began he quickly reassured all us parents that he can keep our children active in the safety of our own homes. I have to add he continued the strenuous daily activities whilst fasting! And our fasts lasting over 12 hours.
I cannot thank Coach Salam enough for keeping something stable in our lives as lockdown effected us mentally physically and emotionally. With Coach Salam continuing taekwondo practice daily it helped our kids to channel some energy through their training, thus creating a happier mind for them. Coach Salam motivated them in this most difficult time with encouraging words which pushed them to become healthier and mentally strong. Even through a screen he has helped improve and continue their training. Also kept in touch with us parents throughout the process. He continues to keep us all informed in WhatsApp groups, adding and updating information about taekwondo and any upcoming events. He has kept us engaged in competitions too, boosting our children’s confidence whilst having fun at the same time.
Overall the best coach to be honest. He shows professionalism whilst showing children and adults care and love! He enforces healthy habits and healthy relationships between parent and child, encouraging us all to be engaged to bring out the best in our children. He has brought forth a community in which empowers the youth of an ethnic minority, in which highlights their strengths manifesting that they can accomplish anything.
We have been so lucky to have Coach Salam who puts our needs first, actively providing us with help and information especially in these unprecedented times”.
“I am a parent of a girl who does Taekwondo with Welsh Taekwondo dragons.
During this pandemic her coach Mr Salam Abdul has provided training sessions 6 days a week to the little Dragons as well as other local groups.
He has been very helpful and understanding during these times. He’s always looking to keep children active and engaged with their training for Taekwondo. It’s been 8 months and the coach did not charge us any sort of payment at all.
Now that school has opened up, he is providing these lessons only twice a week. He’s dedicated his time to help his students achieve.
He did not want the students to miss out on training during this pandemic and also keeping in mind how some people have lost their jobs and who have been struggling financially. Abdul should be an inspiration to all. He didn’t look at his benefit but looked at the benefit his students will get.
My daughter enjoys her 1 hour sessions as she is keeping on top of things as well.
He is just an amazing coach”.

“I am the mother of Mohammed Eessa Chowdhury. My son’s coach Mr Salam Abdul From Welsh Taekwondo Dragons has been amazing.
Mohammed did Taekwondo for a year, but due to corona virus he stopped. However, seeing his cousin on zoom training sessions with our coach made him want to join again. He said to himself if my cousin can do it then why can’t I! That has only been possible because of the help and support that the coach has given to each and every child.
With lockdown happening the financial pressure did fall on us, but our coach has gone out of his way to cater for the children by providing the lessons for free.
As well as training the children he is also encouraging them to eat healthily and do regular exercises to keep on top of things.
I am giving my hats off to Mr Abdul for all his help and support he has given Mohammed”.

Following all of the positive feedback Salam received from his members, we caught up with to find out a little bit more about his time over the past year:
“The pandemic has been a distressing time for all and it became even more important now that we look after our physical and mental health. Therefore, we had decided that even though we were unable to continue with face-to-face sessions, we would run daily virtual sessions using the platform Zoom. When the lockdown started in March, we started virtual sessions which lasted for an hour from Monday to Saturday, until September. Due to the start of school, from September we continued the sessions but changed the frequency to twice weekly.
The sessions were extremely beneficial not only to our students but also to us because it ensured we were staying fit and allowed us to continue our passion for teaching Taekwondo. Our students have expressed that the sessions were enjoyable and made them happy amongst such worrying times. They have also said that the sessions were the highlight of their day and they also encouraged their parents to join in.
We had run the sessions free of charge, as we understood during this unprecedented time many families were struggling financially. We didn’t want these sessions to be a financial burden on parents and we wanted to ensure all children have access to the sessions.
The sessions were a success and this is all down to the support we had received from the parents; without their support, we wouldn’t have been able to continue with the sessions.
To encourage students to wear masks and understand it’s importance we had designed masks with our logo and distributed to all students free of charge!“
We would like to say well done and thank you to Salam for his dedication during this difficult time, we hope these messages of support from your members inspire you to keep up your hard work!
