The 5 greatest fighters from the UK in UFC history

March 30, 2021 by admin

2021 could be a big year for UK-based fighters in the UFC. Darren Till faces Marvin Vettori in the UFC’s next main event and could receive a UFC Middleweight title shot with a win. Meanwhile, Liverpool-based prospect Paddy Plimblett has also been signed by the promotion.

Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of UK-based fighters enter the UFC’s Octagon, but who is the greatest British UFC fighter of all time?

There are a number of notable candidates, but the following five stand out as being the best British fighters in UFC history.

#5 Ross Pearson (UFC record: 12-13-1)

Ross Pearson won the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter.
Ross Pearson won the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter.

While the back end of his UFC career damaged his record somewhat, Ross Pearson remains one of the most outstanding UFC fighters to be produced by the UK.

The Real Deal first emerged into the UFC via the ninth season of TUF. Coached by Michael Bisping, Pearson won the Lightweight tournament in the USA vs. UK tournament, outpointing his countryman Andre Winner in the finals.

Few fans expected him to go onto major UFC success, but he actually became one of the Lightweight division’s most reliable fighters.

Pearson picked up major wins over the likes of Dennis Siver, Spencer Fisher, and Gray Maynard during his decade-long tenure with the UFC.

And in 2012, he became the second British fighter to coach on a series of TUF, going up against George Sotiropoulos’ team of Australians. The Real Deal would knock Sotiropoulos out at the finale of the show.

Pearson was never able to gain a shot at the UFC Lightweight title and was way past his prime when he finally left the UFC in 2019. But this likable fighter still makes it onto the list of the best British fighters in UFC history.

#4 Darren Till (UFC record: 6-3-1)

Darren Till could find himself in line for a shot at the UFC Middleweight title in the near future.
Darren Till could find himself in line for a shot at the UFC Middleweight title in the near future.

Darren Till’s UFC record isn’t all that gaudy, but there’s no denying this product of Liverpool has established himself as one of the UFC’s greatest British fighters.

The Gorilla debuted in the UFC on short notice back in 2015 but made an instant splash by violently TKO’ing Wendell Oliveira.

From there, his rise was understated. He drew with Nicolas Dalby after injuring his shoulder, but after wins over Jessin Ayari and Bojan Velickovic, Till was given a big chance by the UFC.

In the main event of the UFC’s first show in Gdansk, he found himself facing off with veteran Donald Cerrone. He subsequently stopped Cowboy in the first round.

The win launched Till into stardom, particularly in the UK. And just months later, he headlined the UFC’s first show in his hometown of Liverpool against veteran Stephen Thompson.

After receiving one of the biggest reactions in UFC history from his home crowd, The Gorilla outpointed Wonderboy to earn a shot at UFC Welterweight champ Tyron Woodley.

Till lost that fight, and following another loss to Jorge Masvidal, he moved to 185lbs, where he instantly moved into title contention with a win over Kelvin Gastelum.

The Gorilla is now likely one win away from a shot at UFC Middleweight champ Israel Adesanya – which could mean that he may become the next fighter from the UK to claim UFC gold.

#3 Dan Hardy (UFC record: 6-4)

Dan Hardy fought for the UFC Welterweight title in 2010.
Dan Hardy fought for the UFC Welterweight title in 2010.

The first fighter from the UK to receive a shot at a UFC title, it’s easy to forget Dan Hardy’s accomplishments.

That’s probably because The Outlaw is seen more as a commentator these days, as he was forced into semi-retirement due to a congenital heart issue discovered back in 2012.

Hardy – who was recently released by the UFC after a mysterious spat with an unnamed UFC official – joined the promotion in 2008 after an impressive run that saw him win eight of nine fights, with the only loss coming via disqualification.

He defeated PRIDE veteran Akihiro Gono in his UFC debut and followed that up with impressive wins over Rory Markham and Marcus Davis.

Those wins propelled The Outlaw into a surprising UFC Welterweight title eliminator with Mike Swick. And Hardy duly won the fight to earn a shot at champion Georges St. Pierre.

The native of Nottingham lost that title shot but put up a good fight and lasted the distance with GSP. And while he lost his next three fights – to Carlos Condit, Anthony Johnson, and Chris Lytle – he was never truly outclassed.

Hardy got back on the winning track in 2012 with wins over Duane Ludwig and Amir Sadollah. But as previously stated, his rare heart condition then forced him into early retirement.

Despite this, though, Hardy’s achievements remain some of the best from a British fighter in the UFC and definitely warrant him a spot on this list.

#2 Leon Edwards (UFC record: 10-2-1)

Leon Edwards is currently ranked as one of the UFC
Leon Edwards is currently ranked as one of the UFC’s top Welterweights.

When Leon Edwards debuted in the UFC in 2014 in a forgettable loss to Claudio Silva, nobody would’ve predicted that he’d be considered one of the best Welterweights in the world just a few years later.

But that’s exactly what Rocky now is, and with perhaps one or two more wins, he could find himself in line for a shot at the UFC Welterweight title.

The change in Edwards’ fortunes really began when he took almost six months off following a loss to Kamaru Usman in December 2015. Rocky returned in 2016 a much-improved fighter, complete with arguably the best wrestling UFC fans had ever seen from a British fighter.

And in the years that have followed, Edwards has put together an unbeaten run of nine fights, including wins over Donald Cerrone, Vicente Luque, and Rafael Dos Anjos.

Rocky would perhaps be in line for the next title shot had he defeated Belal Muhammad earlier this month. But the fight ended in a No Contest – leaving his next fight a major question mark.

However, no other British UFC fighter has put together a winning streak quite like his, making him a comfortable number two on this list.

#1 Michael Bisping (UFC record: 20-9)

Michael Bisping remains the only British fighter to win a UFC title.
Michael Bisping remains the only British fighter to win a UFC title.

Michael Bisping may not have been the first UFC fighter to hail from the UK – that was Ian The Machine Freeman way back in 2000 – but he remains by far the most successful.

Bisping was given a big push from the UFC’s brass from the off. He won the Light-Heavyweight tournament on the third season of TUF and quickly found himself positioned as the face of the UFC in the UK.

It was Bisping’s star power that helped the promotion sell-out Manchester’s MEN Arena for UFC 70 in 2007. And The Count lived up to his hype, stopping Elvis Sinosic in the co-main event.

But Bisping’s greatest successes came once he dropped to 185lbs in 2008.

With a constantly developing skillset based around his sharp striking, underrated wrestling, and unbelievable cardio, he beat fighters like Chris Leben, Denis Kang, and Yoshihiro Akiyama to establish himself as one of the world’s top Middleweights.

And his outspoken, brash personality also helped to build his reputation as one of the UFC’s premier villains.

However, for a long time, it felt like The Count was destined to go down as one of the best fighters to never claim UFC gold, as he continually fell short before gaining a title shot.

That all changed in 2016, though.

Bisping was thrown into a fight with UFC Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold on late notice, replacing the injured Chris Weidman.

And in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, he knocked Rockhold out in the first round to become the first British fighter to win a UFC title.

Bisping lost the title in his first defense and then retired after one further loss, but by that point, his legacy was intact. With an impressive record of 20-9 as well as a reign as UFC Middleweight champion, he stands as the greatest British fighter in UFC history.

Which former MMA champion is Jake Paul fighting on April 17, 2021?

March 15, 2021 by admin

Jake Paul is all set to trade blows with former MMA champion, Ben Askren on April 17, 2021. The former UFC fighter will face Jake Paul in an 8-round boxing match under the Triller Fight Club banner. According to Triller co-founder Ryan Kavanagh, the bout will be contested with 10-ounce gloves in a 20-by-20 ring.

This will be Jake Paul’s first bout against someone with an actual background in combat sports. Ben Askren is a former two-time NCAA wrestling champion, a two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, a 2008 Olympian, and a former Bellator and One Championship Welterweight Champion.

While Askren started his career with a perfect 19-0 record, he is perhaps best remembered for getting knocked out by Jorge Masvidal in 5 seconds. Askren retired from the sport last year after needing hip replacement surgery, which he successfully underwent in August.

His last outing in the UFC was a submission loss to Damian Maia. Though ‘Funky’ has a lot of combat experience to his credit, the bout against Jake Paul will mark his professional boxing debut.

Jake Paul, on the other hand, made his professional debut last year against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib. Paul won the bout in the first round via TKO. He followed that up with a second-round knockout of former NBA player Nate Robinson in his next outing.

Jake Paul is taking Masvidal’s help

Jake Paul has reportedly shifted to Miami as South Florida has a variety of fighters to offer who can help him prepare for Ben Askren. One of the fighters Paul is paying heed to is Jorge Masvidal whose 5-second KO of Ben Askren holds the UFC record for the quickest knockout. According to Jake Paul, Masvidal is guiding him on how to knock Ben Asren out even faster. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Paul told Mike Bohn:

“(Masvidal) said, ‘Look, Ben is going to try to hang onto you and wrestle you and clinch you and try to wear you out. We were just working on clinch drills and fighting on the inside, and he was trying to show me how to knock out Ben faster than he did. So, we’ll see what happens. I might go running at Ben right in the first two seconds to try to break (Masvidal’s record). But Masvidal is great. He’s very supporting. He’s always been my homie and supported me, and that goes both ways. I’m excited to see if I can knock out Ben faster than Masvidal.”

‘My manager at home, he fainted’ – Derrick Lewis tells Joe Rogan about his most satisfying KO

March 14, 2021 by admin

Top UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis ranks his knockout of Alexander Volkov at UFC 229 as the most satisfying KO of his fighting career.

During his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Derrick Lewis reflected upon the come-from-behind win and told Joe Rogan that the reaction from the fans in attendance made the effort worthwhile for him more than anything else.

“That was (most satisfying knockout). But the crowd made it really exciting and satisfying because of the way they reacted. Seeing that one guy that played it in the movie (Chris Pratt), seeing his reaction made it all worthwhile,” Derrick Lewis stated.

Derrick Lewis pulled off a spectacular win while on the verge of losing the fight on the judges’ scorecards. It was only natural for his supporters and teammates to get overwhelmed by the emotions. The Black Beast revealed that his manager fainted after watching the knockout while police had to be called to contain the excitement of his fans in his neighborhood.

My manager at home, he fainted. He couldn’t take it either no more. So everyone was just so pumped about it. Some Police were called because of my neighbors, some fans going so crazy after that fight. I got him when my coaches said we’ve got a minute left, 30 seconds left. Then I am like, okay,” Derrick Lewis told Joe Rogan.

When did Derrick Lewis fight Alexander Volkov and what happened in the fight?

UFC 229: Lewis v Volkov

Derrick Lewis and Alexander Volkov fought on the main card of the UFC 229 pay-per-view event headlined by the biggest grudge match in MMA history between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. The event took place on October 6, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Volkov displayed an overall better game through the entirety of the fight and outstruck Lewis 121 to 39 in terms of significant strikes that landed. But the ever-dangerous Derrick Lewis knocked Volkov down with a perfectly timed overhand right in the closing seconds of the fight, followed by a few follow-up shots to close the show. The finish came at the 4:49 mark of the third round and is considered among the best comeback victories in the history of the UFC. The win was followed by one of the most hilarious and iconic octagon interviews that gave rise to the catchphrase ‘my balls was hot’.

Both Volkov and Lewis have climbed through rankings since their first meeting and now sit among the top five in the heavyweight division. The first fight between them raised more questions than it answered. A high-stakes rematch in the near future is not out of the question if both continue with their winning ways.

“We can meet again down the line” – Leon Edwards isn’t ruling out fighting Khamzat Chimaev in the future

March 13, 2021 by admin

Leon Edwards did not rule out the possibility of fighting Khamzat Chimaev in the future. Rocky was initially supposed to fight the Swedish star at UFC Vegas 21 during this weekend.

The Welterweight bout between the rising star and Leon Edwards was rescheduled three times after both fighters tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the fight.

Speaking to RT Sport, ‘Rocky’ said he would be open to face Chimaev in the future if the conditions for the fight suited him at the moment.

“I’m looking towards the title shot. This is my main aim: to be a world champion. Khamzat [Chimaev] has only had three fights in the UFC with guys not even in the top-10 in the UFC, you know what I mean. So, my aim is to be a world champion. So, I’m looking towards the belt, not Khamzat. If he works his way up, he’s young, you know what I mean. If he works his way up, surely we can meet again down the line,” Leon Edwards said.

Rocky also offered a piece of advice to the 26-year-old Swedish-Russian mixed martial artist, who is still suffering from the long-lasting effects of COVID-19.

“Khamzat, rest up. [After] recovering, hopefully, one day, we can meet down the road,” said Leon Edwards.

UFC booked Belal Muhammad to fight Rocky after the third attempt for the fight failed to materialize. Chimaev is still struggling to recover his form because of lingering symptoms of COVID-19.

The first time their bout was postponed in 2020 was due to Leon Edwards having tested positive to COVID-19. The British fighter reportedly lost almost 12 pounds while infected.

Per sources, Leon Edwards’ (@Leon_edwardsmma) case of Covid-19 was pretty severe. He couldn’t train at all, and he lost 12 pounds in four days. He’s in the process of recovering at home. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery.

Because of that, Rocky understands the difficulties Khamzat Chimaev is facing at the moment. The UFC Welterweight sensation contracted the virus last December.

Chimaev made a shocking announcement recently, stating that he would be retiring from MMA due to the severe after effects of COVID-19 on his body.

In the same interview with RT Sport, Leon Edwards minimized past controversies with the young fighter and wished him a speedy recovery.

“At the end of the day, there’s life after fighting, right? And he’s a young man, and I wish him nothing but good health and to recover. Fighting is fighting, but when you’re going through problems like that, it’s different. It’s personal, right? You’ve got a family and other stuff. So, I wish him well, and that’s it, really,” said Leon Edwards.

‘I feel like in a way he actually cared’ – Claressa Shields appreciates Conor McGregor’s support

February 26, 2021 by admin

Claressa Shields thanked Conor McGregor for extending his support ahead of her venture in the world of mixed martial arts. The Boxing champion said that she will use the Notorious One’s advice and hopes to have a successful career in MMA.

In a recent interview with Betway Insider, the P4P No.1 female Boxer reflected upon the words of wisdom provided by the former UFC double champion Conor McGregor after she announced her transition into MMA via a social media post.

T-Rex also acknowledged Conor McGregor as one of the greats in the sport. However, she attributed the MMA GOAT status to former Light Heavyweight Champion and teammate, Jon Jones.

“To me, Jon Jones is the GOAT in MMA, but Conor McGregor was considered the GOAT once upon a time too and they’re both great in their own right. I just feel when Conor reached out, I feel like in a way he actually cared and he was wishing me good luck and that’s what I appreciated most. He didn’t have to give me any advice, he could have just seen it and kept on but instead he was like, ‘I’m going to give out this advice’, and it was great. I took it, I use it and hopefully everything goes as it’s supposed to go,” said Shields.

Claressa Shields fought Evana Habazin for the vacant WBC and WBO Light Middleweight title in January 2020 and won the fight via unanimous decision. Shields signed a multi-fight deal with Professional Fighters League in December last year and started training at the famed Jackson Wink MMA Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Claressa Shields is expected to make her MMA debut in June 2021. Her contract with PFL permits T-Rex to compete inside both the octagon and the boxing ring. Shields will fight Canadian Boxer Marie-Eve Dicaire on March 5, 2021.

Claressa Shields has a piece of advice for Conor McGregor

When asked if Conor McGregor can avenge his UFC 257 loss against Dustin Poirier, Claressa Shields shared her thoughts on how The Notorious One can avoid the kicks to his leg in the rematch.

T-Rex believes that McGregor needs to get out of the boxing mind frame and make full use of his striking arsenal to be the creative fighter that he used to be.

“I would say he needs to get out of the boxing mindframe to win that fight. He had his front foot too forward, too much weight on his leg, more like a boxer’s stance. It’s like he needs to get back to having light feet and (being) quick and explosive, using all his attributes, not just his punches; punches, kicks, knees, he needs to get back being creative,” said Shields.
