IPL 2021: Felt insulted when teams did not show interest in me in 2018: Harshal Patel

April 13, 2021 by admin

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) medium-pacer Harshal Patel has said that he felt insulted after franchises did not show much interest in him during the IPL 2018 auction. However, he added that the experience led him to work hard on his batting and become a better all-round player.

Harshal Patel, who claimed a five-for against Mumbai Indians in RCB’s IPL 2021 opener, was purchased by Delhi Capitals at his base price of INR 20 lakh during the 2018 auction. However, he did not get to play a lot of games.

Reflecting on that phase, Harshal Patel said at a virtual press conference.:

“In the 2018 IPL, a lot of people didn’t show interest in me, and that struck me. I took it as an insult because I wanted to become a player who was a match-winner and had a lot of value. Then I realised that if I worked a little bit on my batting, people would start having faith in my batting, and I could become that valuable player.”

Harshal Patel continued in this regard:

“Batting is something that I have always done well, but I have never focussed a lot on. But if I find my way around any difficulties I face in batting and score runs in difficult situations, I can definitely prove my worth as an all-rounder”.

Harshal Patel created history in IPL 2021, as he became the first bowler to claim a five-wicket haul against defending champions Mumbai Indians.

He displayed excellent variations to dismiss the dangerous trio of Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard en route to finishing with impressive figures of 5 for 27. Krunal Pandya and Marco Jansen were his two other scalps.

RCB chased down a 160-run target to romp home by two wickets. Fittingly, it was Harshal Patel who hit the winning runs off the last ball of the pulsating encounter.

Harshal Patel will be RCB’s designated death bowler

After the victory against MI, Harshal Patel said at a press conference that he had been made aware of his role by the RCB management during the first training camp itself.

Harshal Patel was told that he would be expected to bowl at least a couple of overs at the death. The 30-year-old elaborated in this regard:

“When I was traded (from Delhi to RCB), I was told what kind of role I would be playing in the team. When we gathered for our first camp, there were very clear instructions to me that I was going to bowl at least two overs at the death. That gave me a lot of clarity and confidence to work on my skills and develop plans against certain batters that I could face in the death overs in various teams. That clarity was given to me very early, and that made my preparation a lot more concise.”

RCB will look to continue their winning ways when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday.

IPL 2021: “I am as young as ever!” – AB de Villiers looking forward to another season with RCB

April 8, 2021 by admin

AB de Villiers can’t wait to get going with Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021. The South African ace claimed he feels as young as ever after some intense training sessions over the past few months.

The 37-year-old has featured in every IPL season since its inception in 2008. AB de Villiers made the comments during an appearance on RCB’s Bold Diaries after he came out to practice on April 7.

“I had a nice few training sessions, a lot of fitness, a lot of gym work. I feel ready and I am as young as ever so looking forward to it,” claimed de Villiers.

AB de Villiers landed in India on April 1 and has been in hotel quarantine ever since. The star batsman came out of quarantine on Thursday and took part in a training session with the rest of the squad. AB de Villiers was RCB’s third-highest run-getter with 454 runs last season, and will once again don the finisher’s role for the side.

He was satisfied with how his first training session went, but AB de Villiers admitted there were few things he needed to get right before the first game against Mumbai Indians.

“We have spent a lot of time in the room in the last week and before that, we were travelling. It was quite intense coming out. I hit the floor running and gave it my absolute best. Had a lot of fun out here tonight and I was hitting the ball okay. Not a 100% so I will come back tomorrow for a bit more,” reflected de Villiers.

IPL 2021 will be AB de Villiers’ 11th season with RCB, and he admitted to enjoying his return.

“It is very enjoyable to just be here. I am very excited to play another IPL with the RCB boys and just going to have a lot of fun this year,” said de Villiers.

AB de Villiers reveals how he prepped for IPL 2021

AB de Villiers last took to the field in IPL 2020, and the explosive batsman has not played a game since the Eliminator loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Discussing his training routine for this year’s edition, AB de Villiers disclosed he has been training both indoors and outdoors to get himself up to speed.

“Yeah, I have quite a few sessions for the last six weeks. Quite a few outdoors and indoors. I mixed it up nicely. When I wanted to work on shots I would go indoors and if I wanted to have a feel for the outdoors with the nibbling around a bit I would spend an hour or so in the outdoors,” concluded AB de Villiers.

Despite the arrival of players like Kyle Jamieson and Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers is still RCB’s marquee overseas star. The 37-year-old was seen practising wicket-keeping on his first day back in training, and AB de Villiers could once again don the gloves for RCB in IPL 2021.

Why did Rajasthan Royals purchase Chris Morris for a record INR 16.25 crore? Kumar Sangakkara answers

February 18, 2021 by admin

Rajasthan Royals’ Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, stated that South African all-rounder Chris Morris’ proven skills and record in the IPL made the franchise bid for him at a record price.

Chris Morris became the most expensive buy at an IPL auction, beating Yuvraj Singh’s record, who was purchased by Delhi Capitals for INR 16 crore.

Morris entered the IPL 2021 auction at a base price of INR 75 lakh after being released by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) ahead of the mini-auction.

In a video posted on Rajasthan Royals’ official Twitter account, Sangakkara explained in detail why the franchise went for the veteran all-rounder at such a high price. He said:

“(Chris) Morris (was bought) especially for his ability in terms of the ball. His numbers across the IPL are very good. And, of course, he has got the ability to get runs with the bat as well. He has a specific role for us to play. Very happy with the way things have gone.”

Admitting that the price may seem a bit high, Sangakkara added:

“Yes, it was quite a high price. But, at the same time, the role in the team, and the demand for that role, plays a large part in not just our franchise but any side looking for their players.”

On getting another all-rounder, Shivam Dube, at a price of INR 4.4 crore, the Sri Lankan stated that his purchase was with a view to “strengthen the middle-order”.

Rajasthan Royals struggled with the bat last year despite having big names like Steve Smith, Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson in their line-up.

Apart from Chris Morris and Dube, Rajasthan Royals also purchased Bangladesh’s prolific left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman for his base price of INR 1 crore.

Chris Morris’ IPL record

Chris Morris was purchased by RCB for INR 10 crore last year. However, he could not play all the matches due to injury.

In the nine games that he featured in, the 33-year-old ended up picking up an impressive 11 wickets at a strike rate of 17.27.

He did not get too many chances to bat, and scored 34 runs at a strike rate of 161.90. Chris Morris, though, has the ability to strike big hits if given a chance.

In his overall IPL career, Chris Morris has claimed 80 wickets in 70 matches at a strike rate of 18.42. With the bat, he has scored 551 runs, striking at 157.87, with a best of 82 not out.

RCB appoint Sanjay Bangar as batting consultant for IPL 2021

February 10, 2021 by admin

Sanjay Bangar has become the latest addition to Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) coaching staff ahead of IPL 2021.

Sanjay Bangar will act as RCB’s batting consultant for the upcoming season.

“We are delighted to welcome Sanjay Bangar to the RCB Family as a batting consultant for IPL2021! Welcome aboard, Coach!” RCB posted on Twitter.

The announcement was made earlier today (February 10).

Sridharan Sriram was the team’s batting coach until last year, but no official statement has been made on whether he will continue holding the post for the upcoming season as well, especially after Bangar’s appointment.

As RCB’s batting consultant, Sanjay Bangar will get an opportunity to work with two of the best batsmen in the world in Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Bangar will also play a crucial role in the development of India’s young guns, notably Washington Sundar and Devdutt Padikkal.

Sanjay Bangar has prior IPL experience

Although Sanjay Bangar’s most notable tenure was as India’s batting coach, he has successfully coached several IPL teams in the past.

His most notable season came while coaching the Kings XI Punjab, whom he led to the IPL Final in 2014. It remains the franchise’s best performance to date.

Sanjay Bangar also worked as a batting coach for Kochi Tuskers in 2010.

The new RCB Batting Consultant will hope he can perform a similar role for the franchise, who are still looking for their maiden IPL title, in the upcoming season.

RCB made it to the playoffs in 2020 before losing to the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.
