The Masters: Dustin Johnson blames poor putting for missed cut at Augusta

April 10, 2021 by admin

Six three-putts in rounds of 74 and 75 leave defending Masters champion Dustin Johnson frustrated as he reflected on missing the halfway cut at Augusta National

Dustin Johnson missed the cut by two shots

Dustin Johnson blamed a poor performance on the greens for his early exit at The Masters after the defending champion missed the halfway cut by two shots at Augusta.

Johnson was left to rue six three-putts over the first two rounds which contributed to his downfall, and November’s runaway winner will now have two days of inactivity before reappearing in the Butler Cabin on Sunday evening to present the new champion with a Green Jacket.

The 36-year-old could also lose his world No 1 ranking if that champion is Justin Thomas, who is just three shots behind halfway leader Justin Rose heading into the weekend.

Johnson opened with an erratic 74 on Thursday and needed to better that to avoid crashing out, but he did not give himself encouragement at the first when he tugged his three-wood into the pines and started with a bogey-five.

Birdies at the third and fourth were offset by a six at the fifth, where he blocked his drive and then three-putted from 60 feet, and another shot went at the next before he hit back with birdies at the eighth and ninth to return to two over at the turn.

He remained safely inside the cut mark with four to play, but he came up short with his second to the long 15th and found the water at the front, leading to a bogey-six, and poor drives on each of the closing two holes resulted in a bogey, bogey finish and a round of 75, leaving him at five over par for the tournament.

“Six three-putts in two rounds, you just can’t do that,” said Johnson afterwards. “Obviously I didn’t drive it great but I drove it good enough, and I felt like I was never really too bad out of position.

“It was just the three-putts that killed me. You take all the three-putts away, I’m one under. That was kind of the difference. But yeah, I just didn’t putt very well. My speed was awful. I just left it short from 10 feet there on the last hole. I don’t know, I just didn’t have a good beat on the speed the last two days.”

Johnson warned pre-tournament that his game was not as sharp as it was when he romped to a five-shot victory and his second major just five months ago, but he denied feeling extra pressure as defending champion.

“It’s still kind of the same,” added Johnson, who confirmed he will play in next week’s RBC Heritage. “Obviously I wanted to be around for the weekend. I like this golf course, I feel like I play it very well. I just didn’t putt very good. It’s pretty simple.”

Brooks Koepka mirrored Johnson’s scores of 74 and 75 just three weeks after undergoing knee surgery, and he admitted he would not have played for “another month” had it not been the first major of the year.

Koepka was clearly in discomfort throughout the two days, and even crawled onto the 13th green after stabbing his third shot out from close to the water, and he will now focus on getting fit for a crack at a third PGA title at Kiawah Island next month.

“I wouldn’t have been playing for another month if the Masters wasn’t this week,” he said. “So I’ll take a nice long break after this. The way I look at it, I have two more days to do rehab that I probably wouldn’t get if I was out here, and I’ll get ready for the PGA.

“That’s, what, five weeks ahead, I think? It’s kind of tough to say if I’ll play anything before that just for how it feels, how rehab goes and everything.”

Masters countdown – three days to go: 25 years since Nick Faldo overcame six-shot deficit to beat Greg Norman

April 5, 2021 by admin

A hat-trick of Masters titles looked unlikely as Nick Faldo started the final round six shots behind Greg Norman in 1996, but the Australian crumbled under huge pressure from the English maestro; watch the 2021 Masters live on Sky Sports The Masters from Thursday

We take a look back at Nick Faldo putting the finishing touches to his third Masters win in 1996, turning a six-shot deficit into a five-shot win over Greg Norman

With three days to go to this year’s Masters, we reflect on Nick Faldo’s incredible third victory, coming from six shots behind to beat Greg Norman in 1996.

Norman was so often the ‘nearly man’ in major championships throughout his career, with his two Open wins a poor return for a man who spent 331 weeks as world No 1 – second only to Tiger Woods.

But, 25 years ago, he looked primed to become the first Australian to don a Green Jacket after three excellent days at Augusta National, starting with a record-equalling 63 in which he birdied five of the last seven holes.

Norman added a 69 to lead Faldo by four at the halfway stage, an advantage he stretched to six shots after a 71 in tough conditions on day three, with the Englishman scrambling hard to post a creditable 73.

Many predicted a final-day procession for Norman, but he bogeyed the opening hole and saw his lead reduced to four when he could not match Faldo’s birdie at the sixth.

A Faldo birdie at eight followed by Norman’s third bogey of the outward half at the ninth sent the long-time rivals into the back nine separated by just two strokes. Three holes later, Faldo was two shots ahead.

Norman bogeyed 10 and 11 and then found water with his tee shot at the 12th, resulting in a double-bogey five, while Faldo’s run of four pars was good enough to take him from three behind into the outright lead.

The Aussie regrouped, but Faldo was a relentless front-runner and set up a crucial birdie at 13 with a sublime long-iron to the heart of the green, and he also matched Norman’s birdie at 15 to stay two ahead with three to play.

It was all over when Norman rinsed another ball at the 16th, and Faldo rubbed salt into the wounds with a closing 20-foot putt for birdie at the last which capped a 67, with Norman signing for a 78 to finish five behind.

Patty Tavatanakit holds the 36-hole advantage at the ANA Inspiration ahead of Shanshan Feng; Hull and Hall also in contention as part of a star-studded leaderboard – watch live on Saturday from 11pm on Sky Sports Golf

Charley Hull and Georgia Hall are part of a strong European contingent in contention at the halfway stage of the ANA Inspiration.

The English duo sit three and four shots back respectively after the second round of the opening women’s major of the year, where Thailand’s big-hitting Patty Tavatanakit holds a one-shot advantage after rounds of 66 and 69 at Mission Hills Country Club.

Tavatanakit’s closest challenge comes from Shanshan Feng, who birdied her final two holes to get to eight under in her first LPGA Tour event for 18 months, while Moriya Jutanugarn is two off the pace in third spot.

Moriya Jutanugarn will play alongside Charley Hull in the penultimate group on Saturday

A final-hole birdie close a second successive 69 for Hull and lifted her to tied-fourth alongside Solheim Cup teammate Anna Nordqvist, with Hall a further shot behind after birdieing two of her last four holes to post a two-under 70.

“I played pretty steady today,” Hall said. “I probably missed a bit more fairways and greens than I did yesterday, but I had some good approaches from some tricky situations so I was pretty pleased with how I played.”

Hall is joined on five under by AIG Women’s Open champion Sophia Popov, 2020 champion Mirim Lee, world No 1 Jin Young Ko and former major winners Inbee Park and Lydia Ko.

Leona Maguire fell five behind after carding a one-over 73, while England’s Bronte Law dropped to one under after a second-round 74 and Mel Reid slipped into the group on level-par that also includes Stephanie Meadow.

Michelle Wie West followed a first-round 70 with a seven-over 79 on Friday, seeing the 31-year-old miss the cut in only her second consecutive start since returning to the LPGA Tour.

Leona Maguire impressed during the opening round in California

Leona Maguire heads a strong European contingent at the ANA Inspiration and is a shot off the early lead at the opening women’s major of the year.

Maguire mixed six birdies with a lone bogey on her way to a five-under 67 at Rancho Mirage, with the Irishwoman picking up a shot at the par-five last to join Shanshan Feng – making her first LPGA Tour start for 16 months – in tied-second.

The pair are a stroke behind Thailand’s Patty Tavatanakit, who reached all the par-fives in two and posted six birdies on her way to a blemish-free 66, while Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist is a further shot back in a share of fourth with the Jutanugarn sisters and Megan Khang.

“It was a pretty calm and relaxing day today,” Tavatanakit said. “I just stuck to my game plan and didnt get too greedy out there. I was just being really patient and I was waiting for putts to drop, and they did on the back nine.”

Georgia Hall started her bid for a second major title with a bogey-free 69 and Charley Hull chipped in for eagle at the par-five 11th on her way to posting the same score, with Bronte Law also three off the pace after making a strong start to the week.

Michelle Wie West, in only her second tournament after a nearly two-year absence due to a wrist injury and then maternity leave, is four strokes back after recovering from an opening-hole bogey to post a two-under 70.

“I am just happy to see my name on the first page of the leaderboard,” Wie West said. “That’s really special to me. Been a long time since I’ve seen that.”

Graeme McDowell blew his chance to win the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for the second time in three years with a disappointing finish in the Dominican Republic.

The Northern Irishman, who won the PGA Tour event in 2019, bogeyed both the 17th and 18th as he finished two behind the winner Joel Dahmen.

Englishman Danny Willett had been only one off the lead overnight but he had to settle for eighth place, two shots behind McDowell, after only managing a one-over 73.

American Dahmen, 33, who came into the event off six missed cuts in his last seven starts, claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory in his 111th event thanks to a two-under 70 which lifted him to 12-under 276.

He had started the day tied for the lead with Puerto Rico’s Rafael Campos and made a strong start with four birdies over the first seven holes, but bogeys at the 11th and 14th tested his nerve.

Campos, like McDowell, bogeyed the 17th to drop one behind and he then saw his birdie putt at the last shave the hole as four closing pars secured Dahmen the title.

American Sam Ryder made a late charge with a five-under 67 to share second with Campos on 11 under.

McDowell had looked well-placed to win after five birdies over the opening 12 holes, before his poor finish left him with a 69 and in a share of fourth on 10 under with Canada’s Michael Gligic (71).

“Bogey-bogey today was very disappointing, but they’ve actually been very good to us this week, those holes,” McDowell said. “I played 17 two under until today and it certainly didn’t owe me very much, let’s put it that way.

“But I just kind of lost my ball flight a little bit coming in there today. It’s been such a difficult week, just strong breeze every day and you have to really, really control your iron shots well. They just kind of let me down at the last minute.

“It’s great to feel disappointed with a top 10 because it’s been a really, really rough three months this year. It’s actually been a rough stretch since last June, since we came back after the break. I really haven’t played the type of golf I know I’m capable of.

“It’s been a tough run and this is really a light at the end of the tunnel this week, so it’s really important that I sort of frame this up the right way. This is massive progress.

“You could look at those two bogeys and if you focus on those, all you see is disappointment, but I have to focus on the bigger picture, which is I’m back playing the kind of golf I know I can play.

“I’m going to San Antonio next week with a chance to compete in the golf tournament, which is what I believe I’m capable of.”

Defending champion Hudson Swafford (70) shared sixth place with Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo (71) on nine under.
