Meanwhile, Barcelona president Joan Laporta and co. are busy preparing ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top stories involving Barcelona from 9 April 2021.

Real Madrid will take on Barcelona this Saturday in an El Clasico that could have a huge impact on the La Liga title race this season. Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and Barcelona captain Lionel Messi are both tipped to leave their respective clubs in the summer and as such, this Clasico could mark the end of an era.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has however backed Lionel Messi to stay put at Barcelona. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Zidane said (via Marca):

“I don’t want it to be Messi’s last Clásico, I want him to stay at Barcelona. He’s fine there. It’s good that he stays for La Liga.

“We know the player that Messi is. He may not be scoring goals, but we know the player that he is. We are going to play against Barcelona. It is true that we know the player that he is, but they are all very good – they have many great players.”

He wishes the same for Sergio Ramos, who is out of contract in the summer.

“Hopefully it is not his last Clasico and he stays here.”

Recent reports have suggested that Neymar has put his contract extension talks at Paris Saint-Germain on hold as he wishes to return to Barcelona. Neymar is out of contract next summer and if he decides not to extend it, this summer will be PSG’s final chance to cash in on the Brazilian.

In addition to Neymar, Barcelona have been heavily linked with Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay. According to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), even though the Barcelona dressing room is divided on a lot of issues, they are united in wanting the club to sign Neymar instead of Depay.

The report adds that Paris Saint-Germain are interested in Ousmane Dembele and as such, Barcelona could possibly pull off a swap deal for Neymar.

As per the report, Barcelona could offer one of Ansu Fati, Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Clement Lenglet to the Old Trafford outfit.

However, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it clear just last week that he wants the Frenchman to stay at Old Trafford. He said:

“While he’s been at the club Paul has always wanted what is best for Man United. He’s been such an important part of the squad on and off the pitch. Paul is a player we want to see at Man United and play well. Just to have him back fit for the last two months, he’s going to be important to us.

“We know he can be the difference between many, many points or going through in Europe like we did against AC Milan. The focus is now on finishing the season strongly and Paul knows what my thoughts are.”

Barcelona set to finalize transfer of Premier League star ‘in coming days’ – Reports

March 19, 2021 by admin

Barcelona have been heavily linked with a move for Manchester City centre-back Eric Garcia and now latest reports from Catalunya Radio claim that Laporta will finalize the defender’s contract in the coming days.

The former La Masia product is considered to be one of the best young centre-backs in Europe at the moment. With his contract running out at Manchester City, Barcelona are ready to swoop in and make him the first signing of this transfer window.

Still only 20, Eric Garcia broke through to the Manchester City senior squad and got some valuable playing time last season. However, Garcia’s refusal to renew his contract with the Cityzens has seen his playing opportunities dry up drastically this season.

Pep Guardiola even admitted that the player will be leaving soon and playing for Barcelona in the future. Speaking to Goal recently, Guardiola said:

“Eric Garcia is like a son. He was a guy last season that after lockdown was our best central defender. He never made a mistake and played in the quarter-final of the Champions League.

“He’s going to play in Barcelona and that is not an average player – he is a top player. He was not selected in the last two games and it broke my heart.

“That is why it is difficult for all the managers when you have a squad. You cannot imagine what it means.”

Eric Garcia will be hoping to break into the Barcelona first team next season and he could be an excellent long-term replacement for veteran defender Gerard Pique.

Barcelona have some interesting decisions to make in the summer transfer window

Barcelona will have some tough decisions to make in the transfer window. While securing the future of Lionel Messi is a priority, Ronald Koeman will also be keen to revitalize his current squad and add some fresh legs.

With the deal for Eric Garcia all but done, Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman will probably turn his attention towards the transfers of Georginio Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay.

Not 1⃣, not 2⃣, not 3⃣…

We have counted up to 4⃣3⃣ #Messi records with Barça 😱😱

Both Dutch stars enjoyed a good relationship with Koeman when he was the Netherlands national team manager and have been linked with a move to Barcelona in the last few weeks.

The Catalan giants seem to be slowly getting back to their best and the potential free transfer of Eric Garcia in the coming days could be another step in the right direction.

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman was a happy man as his side thrashed Huesca 4-1 last night. It was a historic night for Lionel Messi as he matched Xavi’s record for most appearances for the club, making his 767th outing in a Barcelona shirt and he celebrated that by turning in an inspirational performance.

Speaking to the press after the win, Ronald Koeman heaped praise on Lionel Messi. He said:

“I think Messi has shown that he is the best. The first goal was fantastic. He deserves so much to be important to this team. Luckily he’s still with us.

“It’s a very good result to keep growing. We had a good first half and we kept up the intensity in the second. We finally got a goal from a corner. People work hard on set pieces. A great goal for Óscar.”

Just when some stability seemed to have been restored at Barcelona, things have taken a fresh twist. In order for any presidential election winner to assume the role, he/she would have to deposit 15% of the club’s budget, which in this case is €124 million.

Now, as per El Periodico, newly elected Barcelona president Joan Laporta is short by €70 million on his deposit and the deadline for him to put down the money is Wednesday. If he cannot furnish the funds in time, the whole election process will need to be repeated.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is now closer than ever to joining Barcelona. The Dutchman’s contract with Liverpool runs out in the summer and he is yet to sign an extension.

Ronald Koeman has managed Wijnaldum for the Dutch international side and wants to reunite with him at the Camp Nou. Barcelona have been monitoring his situation for a while now and are now 95% done with the deal, according to the report.

Wijnaldum can play as both a no. 6 and a no. 9 and is quite an experienced campaigner.

Gini Wijnaldum about his contract: “At the moment there is no news. It’s not that I’m not happy that I have to leave, I’m happy here. But it’s not as easy as people think… you have to negotiate with the club and there are a lot of factors”. No agreement, as of today. 🔴 #lfc

“Messi will weigh up the offer we make him. I’m convinced that if the other candidates win, Messi will not remain at Barcelona. He wasn’t happy during Freixa’s time on the board.”

Barcelona News Roundup: Barca midfielder returns to training ahead of schedule, Haaland and Mbappe rumours branded ‘irresponsible’ and more – 2 March 2021

March 2, 2021 by admin

Barcelona have received a major boost as one of their injured players has resumed training.

Barcelona have been rocked by the arrests of club officials and others, including former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, as new details of the BarcaGate scandal come to light. There is plenty going on both on and off the field as the club continues to find itself in a difficult financial condition in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top stories involving Barcelona from 2 March 2021.

Jean-Clair Todibo seeking permanent Barcelona exit

Jean-Clair Todibo
Jean-Clair Todibo

Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo is currently on loan with Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice. He has now admitted that he does not care about the goings-ons at his parent club.

Todibo has admitted that he would like to see Nice and Barcelona strike a deal for him as he doesn’t want to return to Catalunya. Speaking to the press ahead of Nice’s game against Nimes, Todibo said he strongly hopes he can stay at Nice.

He said:

“I don’t know if it is sorted (for next season), but it is an ambition of mine. So I strongly hope it happens. My individual performances will determine if I stay here or not. Nothing is done.”

On what is happening at Barcelona, Todibo said:

“Without lying to you, I am not strongly interested in what’s going on. I watch matches from time to time when my French colleagues play like Ousmane Dembele, Clement Lenglet or Samuel Umtiti. I watch just because I consider them to be friends. But aside from that I am not necessarily following them.

“I am focused on OGC Nice, that is most important for me. What good does it do to dream of the Barcelona defence when at the weekend I play vs Rennes or Nimes?

“The most important thing is to focus on those matches. They are matches that will bring points for Nice. Today I am a Nice player, I am not a Barcelona player.”

On-loan Jean-Clair Todibo was asked if parent club Barcelona can come back against PSG:

🗣 “Honestly, that doesn’t interest me at all.

“I hope for them that they will do it. They either do it, or they don’t. That is not my problem if you know what I mean.”

Former Barcelona vice-president says Haaland-Mbappe links are ‘irresponsible’

Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi

Rafael Yuste, who used to be vice-president under Joan Laporta in the past, has spoken out against Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe rumours, drawing attention to the club’s precarious financial condition.

Yuste has urged the club to focus on retaining Lionel Messi, whom he hailed as the ‘best in the world’. Barcelona’s presidential hopefuls have already made tall claims about potential transfer targets but Yuste, who is looking to return to the role of vice-president, has dismissed those promises as ‘irresponsible’.

He told Mundo Deportivo:

“Today, with a debt of 1,173 million, it would be irresponsible to say that we are going to sign Haaland or Mbappe. In addition, we have a squad that can give a lot of joy to the members and a brave coach who bets on young people.

“As we turn around the situation and generate resources, there will be a choice, but now let’s support what we have and see how far we can go. Right now we already have the best in the world called Leo Messi.”

Pedri returns to training

Barcelona midfielder Pedri had to be taken off in the game against Sevilla due to a calf problem and it was reported that he is set to miss out for at least a couple of weeks. However, in a surprising turn of events, Pedri has returned to training.

Ronald Araujo, however, is still training individually for the second consecutive day. Pedri’s return to training could mean he might just make it to the squad for Barcelona’s Copa Del Rey second-leg fixture against Sevilla on Wednesday.
