5 players you didn’t know played for Arsenal

March 5, 2021 by admin

Recognized as one of the Premier League’s giants, Arsenal has been home to some of the greatest players ever seen in England’s top flight.

Names like Thierry Henry, Robin van Persie, and Mesut Ozil are just some of the greats to have played for Arsenal. But many other big names have played for the Gunners and been forgotten since.

While these players saw success elsewhere in their careers, their time at Arsenal was either a failure or forgettable for other reasons.

Here are five players you never knew played for Arsenal.

#1 Jermaine Pennant (12 appearances for Arsenal)

Jermaine Pennant failed to live up to his potential at Arsenal.

A genuine journeyman of football who played for no fewer than 15 clubs during his career, it’s easy to forget that Jermaine Pennant was once an Arsenal player.

In fact, the winger was signed by the Gunners from Notts County at the age of 15, for a fee of £2m.

That fee was a record for a trainee at the time and meant that Pennant was supposed to go on to achieve big things in North London.

Unfortunately, it never really panned out for him. Pennant made his Arsenal debut at the age of 16, becoming their youngest-ever player at that point.

But after scoring a hat-trick on his full league debut, it became clear that the winger’s mentality didn’t quite match his talents.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger never fully trusted him, and he ended up making just 12 Premier League appearances for the Gunners.

Pennant moved to Birmingham City, initially on loan in the 2004-05 season. And after a conviction for drink-driving, he made the move permanent.

Later in his career, Pennant wound up at Liverpool – and even started for the Reds in the 2007 Champions League final.

However, overall, his career was one of wasted potential, and he’s largely been forgotten by Arsenal fans now.

#2 Mathieu Debuchy (13 appearances for Arsenal)

Mathieu Debuchy failed to make a mark at Arsenal.

A French international who won the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2010-11, Mathieu Debuchy spent four seasons with Arsenal.

However, it’d be very easy to forget the full-back’s tenure at the Emirates, largely because he only played a handful of games for them – 13 in the league to exact.

Debuchy’s career in the Premier League actually started with Newcastle United. He moved there in January 2013 after 10 seasons with Lille and performed impressively for the Magpies for a season and half.

His performances at St. James’ Park were enough to persuade Arsenal to part with £12m for him, and the Frenchman was even given the #2 shirt upon his arrival.

However, Debuchy only made 10 Premier League appearances for the Gunners in his debut season. His failure to establish himself in their first team was largely down to a mix of injuries and the emergence of Hector Bellerin.

Debuchy continued to struggle for playing time in the 2015-16 season and then moved to Bordeaux on loan for the second half of the campaign.

That move didn’t pan out either, and he made just nine appearances before returning to the Emirates.

However, despite spending another full season at Arsenal, he played just eight more times for the Gunners before finally moving to Saint-Etienne in January 2018.

Considering his reputation as a high-level French international, to say Debuchy’s time at Arsenal was disappointing would be an understatement.

The Barcelona presidential election will take place on the 7th of March. Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Tony Freixa are the three candidates. Laporta, who was in office during Barcelona’s dominant spell from 2003-2010 has issued an ultimatum of sorts to fans regarding the future of Lionel Messi.

He has urged fans to vote for him as his becoming president is the only scenario in which Lionel Messi will choose to stay put at the Camp Nou. Joan Laporta told RAC1:

“I have a great relationship with Leo and he will consider whatever proposal I make. If I don’t win, I am sure that Leo will not stay at Barcelona.

“Messi will weigh up the offer we make him. I’m convinced that if the other candidates win, Messi will not remain at Barcelona. He wasn’t happy during Freixa’s time on the board.”

This has been one of the worst ever seasons for Barcelona. There has been far too much drama happening in and around the club. Amid all the political turmoil, they also have to deal with the possibility of their star man, Lionel Messi, leaving the club.

Barcelona News Roundup: Barca midfielder returns to training ahead of schedule, Haaland and Mbappe rumours branded ‘irresponsible’ and more – 2 March 2021

March 2, 2021 by admin

Barcelona have received a major boost as one of their injured players has resumed training.

Barcelona have been rocked by the arrests of club officials and others, including former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, as new details of the BarcaGate scandal come to light. There is plenty going on both on and off the field as the club continues to find itself in a difficult financial condition in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the top stories involving Barcelona from 2 March 2021.

Jean-Clair Todibo seeking permanent Barcelona exit

Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo is currently on loan with Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice. He has now admitted that he does not care about the goings-ons at his parent club.

Todibo has admitted that he would like to see Nice and Barcelona strike a deal for him as he doesn’t want to return to Catalunya. Speaking to the press ahead of Nice’s game against Nimes, Todibo said he strongly hopes he can stay at Nice.

He said:

“I don’t know if it is sorted (for next season), but it is an ambition of mine. So I strongly hope it happens. My individual performances will determine if I stay here or not. Nothing is done.”

On what is happening at Barcelona, Todibo said:

“Without lying to you, I am not strongly interested in what’s going on. I watch matches from time to time when my French colleagues play like Ousmane Dembele, Clement Lenglet or Samuel Umtiti. I watch just because I consider them to be friends. But aside from that I am not necessarily following them.

“I am focused on OGC Nice, that is most important for me. What good does it do to dream of the Barcelona defence when at the weekend I play vs Rennes or Nimes?

“The most important thing is to focus on those matches. They are matches that will bring points for Nice. Today I am a Nice player, I am not a Barcelona player.”

On-loan Jean-Clair Todibo was asked if parent club Barcelona can come back against PSG:

🗣 “Honestly, that doesn’t interest me at all.

“I hope for them that they will do it. They either do it, or they don’t. That is not my problem if you know what I mean.”

Former Barcelona vice-president says Haaland-Mbappe links are ‘irresponsible’

Lionel Messi

Rafael Yuste, who used to be vice-president under Joan Laporta in the past, has spoken out against Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe rumours, drawing attention to the club’s precarious financial condition.

Yuste has urged the club to focus on retaining Lionel Messi, whom he hailed as the ‘best in the world’. Barcelona’s presidential hopefuls have already made tall claims about potential transfer targets but Yuste, who is looking to return to the role of vice-president, has dismissed those promises as ‘irresponsible’.

He told Mundo Deportivo:

“Today, with a debt of 1,173 million, it would be irresponsible to say that we are going to sign Haaland or Mbappe. In addition, we have a squad that can give a lot of joy to the members and a brave coach who bets on young people.

“As we turn around the situation and generate resources, there will be a choice, but now let’s support what we have and see how far we can go. Right now we already have the best in the world called Leo Messi.”

Pedri returns to training

Barcelona midfielder Pedri had to be taken off in the game against Sevilla due to a calf problem and it was reported that he is set to miss out for at least a couple of weeks. However, in a surprising turn of events, Pedri has returned to training.

Ronald Araujo, however, is still training individually for the second consecutive day. Pedri’s return to training could mean he might just make it to the squad for Barcelona’s Copa Del Rey second-leg fixture against Sevilla on Wednesday.
