The last category of the Grand Slam in Tashkent was once again dominated by Asian countries with Kim Sungmin (KOR) and Kageura Kokoro (JPN), the man who defeated the King Teddy Riner, on the occasion of the last Paris Grand Slam, last year.
Half way through the final, Kageura was already penalized twice as he looked totally dominated by Kim. But that’s maybe when the Japanese are so strong. After several unsuccessful attempts Kageura launched a last drop-seo-nage that scored a waza-ari just before the final gong of the category and of the tournament.
An other Kim of Korea, Kim Minjong, was confronted with Azeri judoka Ushangi Kokauri pour une place sur le podium. Kim was the first in action, scoring a waza-ari on tani-otoshi. The following attack was clearly a ippon as KIM executed a perfect o-uchi-gari that Kokauri will remember. This is the seventh medal in a grand slam for the Korean.
The last bronze medal contest of the tournament, saw Temur Rakhimov (TJK) and Erik Abramov (GER) competing for a medal and very valuable ranking points. Abramov scored the first waza-ari with a strong and powerful morote-seoi-nage, followed a few seconds later by a counterattack for a second waza-ari and a first medal in a grand slam.
In just a few weeks, the world circuit will stop in Tbilisi, Georgia, before Antalya in Turkey and Kazan in Russia and at the beginning of June the International Judo Federation will organise its world championship in Budapest, Hungary. If all eyes are already on the Tokyo Games, the events of the World Judo Tour, by the summer, will attract the attention of judo fans from every continent.

What better final could the enthusiastic Tel Aviv public hope for than the one that pitted the holder of 20 medals on the World Judo Tour, Kim Sungmin and the Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, Or Sasson (Israel)? After the warm-up of the Paltchik final, once again the Israeli public could make their voices heard and show their passion for judo. After only 25 seconds and a first drop-seoi-nage by Or Sasson, Kim relaxed too much and had a waza-ari scored against him on the edge of the tatami. Read more

World bronze medallist Roy Meyer of the Netherlands held down former world bronze medallist Yakiv Khammo (UKR) for 20 seconds in added time to achieve his first Grand Slam victory. The world number six used his bulky frame to control his Ukrainian rival on the ground to follow up on his superb World Championships display with gold in Abu Dhabi. One-time Grand Slam winner Khammo failed to impose himself while Meyer is now in pole position in the Dutch battle for the +100kg spot at Tokyo 2020. Read more

Asian Games gold medallist Kim Sung-Min (KOR) conquered Olympic silver medallist Harasawa Hisayoshi (JPN) by ippon with an o-soto-gari to win gold in the last contest of the 2019 Paris Grand Slam. Kim has toiled of late and had been surpassed by a new generation of heavyweights but showed he can still mix it with the best and renewed his place among the sport’s top heavyweights. Read more

At the Asian Games in Jakarta Gwak Dong-Han defeated Olympic Champion Mashu Baker in the semi final by ippon and claimed the Asian Games title in the final against Gantulga Altanbagana (MGL). The 2015 World Champion from Korea won bronze in 2014 and gold in the team event. Read more
